From a balcony stateroom, marvel at breathtaking shorelines passing by before enjoying international cuisine in one of our many eateries during your Transatlantic cruise. Before you set sail on your European cruise, indulge in thrills at Tivoli Gardens, and ride a bike along Nyhavn’s waterways, passing multi-colored homes on the way. Tour ancient fortresses, like Kronborg Castle, which inspired Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Or make a stop to see Copenhagen’s most famous symbol, The Little Mermaid. Drove by the Arc de Triomphe, went to the Louvre, had lunch in the Eiffel Tower, and drove along the Champs Elysee. Wish I could have had more time there but I didn't and probably won't be back although one never knows.

Especially in the UK, you’ll find cruising is quiet and less busy than any other form of transportation. I have been on three cruises which offered the tattoo and twice been to Edinburgh on a land based holiday during the Military Tattoo period. Princess obviously run the tattoo excursions when they are on but sometimes organise them from Glasgow, Greenock but more often Edinburgh, South Queensferry. Last time I went it was Edinburgh, Rosyth, (berthed alongside) on Pacific Princess. They anchor just short of the bridge and run a tendering service.
Con: You Won’t Get Sandy Beaches And Sunbathing
Experience the golden age of ocean travel on a Transatlantic cruise with Princess®. Get to know the tranquility of the sea, and meet the cultures and stories that lie ashore. Choose from itineraries that take you to the castles of the British Isles, the beaches of the Mediterranean and the fjords of Scandinavia and Russia. Feel the thrill of classic cruising while basking in the comfort of home on a cruise across the Atlantic Ocean.
Castles
Specialized and local cruises, like the ones run by Hebridean Adventures, take place on a small converted fishing boat. Cruising on a boat like the MV Monadhliath means you can visit remote and quiet sea lochs that are miles from any roads, and also where larger ships cannot enter. Because UK cruises aren’t traveling through large portions of the ocean, you get to see the tucked away bits of the coastline and you can cruise into waterways and lakes. I recommend taking along a copy of Amelia Dalton’s book, Mistress and Commander, her story of how she converted an Arctic fishing boat and ran cruises around the remote Scottish Islands.

In Dublin, head to a countryside bed and breakfast where a local chef invites you to savor homemade scones and jam. Or set out on a day-long tour in Cork with your loved ones and visit the city’s most iconic sites. Stop by the 18th-century village of Kinsale, and then continue to Blarney Castle, where legends and landmarks await. After having 3 cruises cancelled during this pandemic, I went ahead and rebooked the British Isles sailing.

Passenger Life onboard Royal Princess
We stopped in a different port every day, and it got to be a little exhausting. Of course, we didn't want to miss any of the destinations, but we are accustomed to have sea days throughout a cruise to relax and recharge. I must say that it is one of my most awaited onboard experiences. I love being pampered and of course, while onboard will be the best time to do it, maybe during a sea day, just like ours. During the British Isles cruise, all our shore excursions are on private tours so we managed to beat all the queues.

From the painted portraits to the real-life scenery, revel in it all with Princess. On a British Isles cruise, fairytales come to life as you explore storybook castles and enchanting countrysides. Uncover the mysteries of Stonehenge in England, and ascend the Eiffel Tower in Paris. And legend has it, you'll get the gift of gab after visiting the Blarney Stone at Ireland's iconic castle.

Or enjoy a Sunday Roast at Crown Grill™ with roasted meat, potatoes and vegetables. Savor the comforts of home with specialty dining aboard every Princess ship. Discern fact versus fiction on a British Isles cruise, where mysteries and mythologies abound. In Portland, learn about the 5,000-year-old stone circle that displays an advanced understanding of arithmetic and astrology. On itineraries that sail to Cork, search the sea for the Bioluminescence beams created by the region’s gleaming plankton.

In lands famous for their stouts and ales, pubs are the cornerstone of tradition. Cruise the British Isles and step into age-old establishments that are bustling with spirit. In Dublin, get a taste of true pub “craic” — an Irish term that equates to an atmosphere of fun, entertainment and good company.
Discover the best museums, restaurants, cafés, attractions and experiences in the Scandinavian country. Teeming with rural villages and vast countryside, Belfast is an explorer’s playground. Cruise to the British Isles and walk through the basalt formations of Giant’s Causeway. Stroll through the Botanic Gardens and observe the park’s Victorian heritage. Or experience true country living in the cottage of a breadmaker, where you can make fresh-baked goods to accompany your afternoon cup of tea. If you are sailing through the Dover straits during daylight you will see the white cliffs - that could be a deciding factor.
Instead, it is worthwhile to fly into/out of Paris before/after your cruise and take a few days to see it on your own. If you're sailing out of Dover, you can also take a ferry from Le Havre to Dover (and vice versa). If you like cruising, but you usually take cruises around the Caribbean or the Mediterranean, this one will be a little different. If you love sunbathing on deck and dipping in the pool while the sun beats down above you, be prepared, you won’t get that on a UK cruise. Well, you might, as the weather is unpredictable, but by no means guaranteed.
If you like the idea of cruising, but also like your getaways to be quiet, this could be the perfect choice. With the Queen only celebrating her Platinum Jubilee once, this will be the only time to join this cruise. You have one opportunity only to enjoy the story of her reign and the country she is the queen of, in this unusual way. This is great if you manage to book a place — you’ll experience something totally unique — but if you don’t, you’ve missed it forever. There’s something to be said for cruise ships that offer a uniform experience, you always know what you’re getting so you know what to expect and you won’t miss out. On the other hand, one-off trips that can’t be replicated have their own charm and give you something you won’t forget.
We had been talking about doing a British Isles cruise for years before COVID hit, but never did because they were so expensive as compared to other European cruises. We did the Med a few times, the Baltic, the Adriatic, the Holy Land, Hawaii, even Australia/New Zealand... It’s like having your own private nook with a few fine touches. You can either have your own sunbed or even have your own private cabana for the whole duration of your cruise or for a day!
